Selecting a Cold-Weather Heat Pump for Billings

Cold-weather performance depends on the equipment model, system capacity, and integration with the rest of the home. ENERGY STAR cold-climate air-source models are certified based on performance testing down to 5°F. Because performance differs among systems, we evaluate each customer’s needs instead of applying the same recommendation to every property.

Heat pump sizing accounts for the home’s heating and cooling demands, existing HVAC configuration, and selected equipment. An improperly sized system may struggle to maintain comfort or operate as intended. Our highly trained technicians have years of industry experience, and we’re EPA-accredited and NATE-certified through North American Technician Excellence.

Planning for Backup Heat in Colder Conditions

A backup heating system can support the heat pump when outdoor temperatures fall further. Depending on the home and equipment, pairing it with another energy source may provide an efficient heating approach during colder conditions. Often called a dual-fuel system, this configuration uses a heat pump alongside a separate heating source.

Not every home requires backup heat. We assess the home’s comfort needs and current system before discussing the appropriate configuration. For replacement projects, we work with top brands and recommend practical options based on the property.

Our Heat Pump Installation Process

Installation begins with evaluating the home’s comfort needs and identifying equipment with suitable capacity. We offer free estimates for heating and cooling service, allowing homeowners to discuss the current system and proposed work before moving forward.

An installation evaluation may address:

The placement of indoor and outdoor equipment
The home’s electrical capacity and required connections
Compatibility with existing ductwork or backup heating equipment
Site conditions that affect equipment access and setup

The project may involve electrical connections, ductwork integration, and setup of the indoor and outdoor components. Permit requirements vary by property and jurisdiction, so we address them according to the specific installation rather than treating them as a universal step.

Scheduling depends on equipment availability, site conditions, applicable permit requirements, and the amount of work involved. We strive to diagnose HVAC problems and schedule service the same day whenever possible. When a job requires additional time or equipment, we communicate clearly so the homeowner understands the project status.

Heat Pump Installation Costs, Rebates & Tax Credits

Installation cost depends on the selected equipment, home configuration, and site conditions. Operating costs also vary based on household energy use, equipment efficiency, and the backup-heating configuration.

An ENERGY STAR certified air-source heat pump can deliver up to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes. It does this by moving heat instead of generating heat from fuel. Actual energy use depends on the home, weather, and how the system is operated.

Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative Rebates

Eligible Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative members may qualify for an Add-on Heat Pump Rebate of $200 per ton, up to $800, for an air-source heat pump. The rebate must be claimed within 90 days of purchase. Eligibility is limited to qualifying members and installations, so it isn’t available to every Billings homeowner.

The cooperative also offers eligible residential geothermal installations a Geothermal Heat Pump Rebate of $200 per ton, up to $1,000. Homeowners should confirm current program requirements and eligibility with the cooperative before including a rebate in their project budget.

Federal credit status for 2026: As of 2026, the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit for qualifying systems isn’t allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit for geothermal systems also isn’t allowed for expenditures made after December 31, 2025.
